Elk NetworkMichigan Unveils New Elk Management Plan

General | October 21, 2022

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released its newly revised 2023-2033 Elk Conservation and Management Plan.

In doing so, it will host a public open house from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at BJ’s Restaurant and Catering, found at 990 N. Center Ave. in Gaylord, Michigan. DNR wildlife staff will be available during that time for discussion about elk management and the revised elk plan.

If unable to attend the meeting, there are two options to share feedback on the plan, through Nov. 11: via this brief form or do so via email at [email protected] or by traditional mail (DNR Wildlife Division, 1732 W. M-32, Gaylord, MI 49735).

The plan spells out the history of elk in Michigan as well, the current population (1,227 as of January 2022) and range, use of hunting related to elk management and goals, strategies and actions.

Regarding strategies, the plan states where a private landowner may be a willing seller of parcels within the elk range, the DNR will make it a priority to acquire the land and place it in the public’s hands. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation helped with such transactions in the past.

For example, RMEF supplied funding as part of a collaborate effort to expand the Pigeon River Country State Forest by nearly 600 acres in 2019.
