Nevada Ranchers Donate Elk Tags
to Benefit Elk and Veterans
MISSOULA, Mont.—The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will partner with three Elko County ranchers to auction off three coveted Nevada landowner bull elk tags. Proceeds will benefit RMEF’s mission as well as an Elko County veterans organization.
“This is a win-win for elk, elk country and those who serve our country,” said Les Smith, RMEF regional director.
Nathan Boies will represent the Y-3 Ranch near Jackpot and the Mary’s River and Boies Ranches near Wells in helping to sell the tags as a fundraiser for the Veteran’s Ranch and Wilderness Retreat (VRWR), a local start-up that helps veterans with career development, personal and family counselling. VRWR and RMEF will split the proceeds.
“This is an exciting opportunity for us to take care of our veterans,” said Boies. “At the same time, RMEF can put money back into Nevada’s habitat and rangeland.”
The Y-3 Ranch tag is good for the entire 072 Unit, including a portion of the Jarbidge Wilderness, one of Nevada’s premier elk hunting areas. A list of qualified, experienced guides will be provided to the purchaser of this tag. Boies Ranch is a private ranch, much of it in a checkerboard with public land, while Mary’s River Ranch is a large private ranch surrounded by public land. The tag-holder planning to hunt the private land on Mary’s River Ranch must use Snake Mountain Guide Service (Harvey Pete, 775-934-9279). There is a good deal of public land in Unit 075 if the tag holders do not wish to hunt the private land on Mary’s River or Boies Ranches.
The tags will be auctioned off July 25, 2015, in Mammoth Lakes, California, at the Mammoth Lakes Big Game Banquet, the first RMEF banquet in the Eastern Sierra in 15 years and the first banquet for the new Mammoth Lakes Chapter.
Phone and Internet bidding will also be available. Banquet tickets and information are available online at https://events.rmef.org/!N8R, by contacting Rachel Rea at 760-934-2515 ext. 303 or by email at [email protected]. Tag buyers must purchase a Nevada big game hunting license.
