Three environmental groups filed suit against the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service seeking to stop Idaho and Wyoming from allowing the use of bait to hunt black bears. The groups claim the practice is a danger to grizzly bears which are federally protected.
The U.S. Department of Interior previously announced intentions to delist grizzly bears but a judge upheld litigation filed by environmentalists despite a population that continues to grow and spread beyond range not seen in 100 years. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation disagreed with that ruling.
