Below is a Facebook post from the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. For 2023, Fiocchi partnered with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to increase the visibility of poaching incidents in an effort to reduce poaching.
New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is seeking help from the public for information related to a poached bull elk which was left to waste in GMU 54 near Angel Fire.
Earlier this week, UU Bar Ranch hunt managers notified game wardens that a bull elk was found dead near their property boundary with the head removed and field dressed. The ranch had all their hunters and guides accounted for who did not shoot or wound a bull. This bull was found 1.5 miles northeast of Agua Fria Peak, one mile north of GMU 48 Unit boundary.
Anyone who takes or kills a Barbary sheep, bighorn sheep, deer, elk, ibex, oryx, pronghorn or turkey outside of the legal season or without a valid license, which taking or killing results in waste of the animal, is guilty of a 4th-degree felony. Waste of the animal consists of removing from the animal only the head, antlers or horns or abandoning any of the four quarters, backstraps or tenderloins of the carcass.
