Known for conserving and protecting habitat for its signature species and other big game, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is now restoring and enhancing its own “habitat.” Construction is underway on RMEF’s Elk Country Visitor Center at its headquarters in Missoula, Montana.
The exhibit area including the wildlife diorama, which is basically the same as when originally built 20 years ago in 2005, will receive a state-of-the-art upgrade to create a more immersive and inspiring experience for visitors of all ages that better tells the story of elk country and RMEF’s conservation mission. The new exhibit will open to the public later this summer.
RMEF unveiled the redesigned retail section of the visitor center at a grand reopening celebration in 2023. It features a more spacious rotunda, educational displays, short films, elk mounts and expanded hunting gear and apparel options from five of RMEF’s conservation partners – Browning, Eberlestock, Kenetrek, Leupold and Montana Knife Company.
During construction of the new exhibit area, the visitor center’s retail section will remain open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
